YUMA, AZ – Students from Cibola High School’s Education Professions classes wrote and illustrated their own children’s books. On Thursday, Sept. 27 the group visited two Yuma-area elementary schools to read their work aloud.
“It was a great opportunity for students who are considering becoming teachers to experience a part of elementary school life,” Cibola Education Professions teacher Loren Henley said.
Students from both Education Professions 1 and 2 classes, traveled to Valley Horizon and Pueblo elementary schools. They are also members of the Educators Rising student organization. Some of the topics that CHS students covered in their books, included forgiving others, practice giving, having courage and celebrating differences.
“It was really interesting to see how all of the students were engaged listening to the book,” CHS Educators Rising President Alexis Alvarado said. “It was a life-changing experience. It helped me realize that I want to teach younger kids.”
The Education Professions class, which is offered at four Yuma Union High School District schools, prepares students for employment or postsecondary opportunities in the education field. It provides instruction in education career choices, education structure and systems, theory, pedagogy, developmental stages, learning styles and methodology. Students receive interactive experiences with students at different age levels, in a variety of content areas in education environments. They will develop leadership and employability skills through participation in Educators Rising.
