ACTEAZ Legislative Committee Update

Fall 2009

The elections are behind us and excitement about the future is everywhere!  As educators we see reasons to be optimistic and yet there are many challenges ahead.  Your organization, ACTE Az, is prepared to work on a variety of issues facing Career and Technical Education in Arizona.  Here are a handful of priorities for the upcoming year:

  1. Work with the Arizona Department of Education to ensure that there are not roadblocks which prohibit qualified teachers from other states, and persons from industry, from entering the teaching profession.
  2. Work with the Arizona Department of Education to determine how applied mathematics can apply to graduation requirements.  While our Pre-engineering students may need Algebra 3-4, Calculus or Trigonometry, students in many of our programs would be better served by applied mathematics, applied geometry, and applied algebra.
  3. Continue to work with the legislature to ensure full funding of JTEDs including ADM and inflation.
  4. Clean up the wording in the current legislation allowing us to report costs by program instead of by course. Additionally, relative to funding central campus programs, a change in the wording from "owned and operated by" to "owned and/or operated by" would allow us to rent/lease satellite facilities in the evenings, summer or weekends to run "central campus programs" and generate additional ADM.
